Eins Deux Tres is the new single by IDC, electro wizard David McCarthy, the DJ/recording artist, whose eagerly awaited new album The Sun Is Always Shining Above The Clouds, is out in August 2011 on Corsair Records. The blissed out feel-good factor on Eins Deux Tres marks a contrast from IDC's previous "in your face" pneumatically charged singles such as Scratch, Stomp and Daytime Radio Hit. That's why Eins Deux Tres comes as a shock to the system, as it is not only sounds commercial, but also melodic as well. It has already been marked out as 'Electro single of the month' in Mixmag, while DJ Mag goes even further calling it 'single of the year.'
Un deux trois
The record starts of with strings and harmonies reminiscent of Giles Martin's Beatle mash-ups from the Cirque du Soleil's Love soundtrack album. In fact within the first five seconds IDC conjures up sumptuous ELO-like swishing strings against a solid dance beat.
Eins Deux Tres contains a tune that you could imagine former Abba chanteuses Frida and Agnetha harmonising on. Instead IDC's processed phase vocoder vocals (mocking every auto-tune pop record currently oscillating up the charts) are reminiscent of Davy Henderson (from indie band the Fire Engines and cult band Win). This influence is no coincidence since Henderson has worked on a couple of tracks with IDC on the new album.
Eins dwei drei
IDC's career started in the late nineties when he ran and indeed was the DJ at the indie Popscene based at the Astoria, in London. From then he became a pirate of the sonic waves specialising in bootleg mash-ups, which drew attention from the likes of Xfm, who regularly gave IDC a slot.
IDC still operated as a DJ across Europe most notably at the Razzmatazz, Barcelona (and the Eurozone feel of Eins Deux Tres is perhaps a nod to his European fan base). Pretty soon IDC was producing his own tracks via the aptly titled Corsair Records and picking up good press including a quote from DJ Mag which said: "he makes music that sounds like a washing machine on crack."
In 2008 the first IDC album Overthrow The Boss Class was released earning a five star 'Recommended Album' review in International DJ Magazine. In the same year IDC extended his appeal into South East Asia with headlines at Aouk, Singapore and Volar, Hong Kong.
Uno dos tres
In April 2009 IDC released the track Imaginary Bones as an extended single package featuring Lo Fidelity Allstars' Phil Ward on vocals on two distinct versions taken from different recording sessions, along with several remixes.
In February 2011 DJ Mag stated "that 2011 will be his year" and his growing reputation was further enhanced when International DJ cited IDC as "clearly one of electronic music's finest purveyors". The impish release of the ironically titled Daytime Radio Hit, (which was anything but with its expletives courtesy of Holly from The New York Chimes) in June showed that IDC was happiest when he was subverting the airwaves.
With Eins Deux Tres IDC has once again wrong footed those who thought they knew all there was to know about this electro warrior by producing a mellower sound for the summer. On the forthcoming album he also utilises his musical abilities, which extend beyond guitar and bass playing. Based in Brighton McCarthy remains suitably enigmatic about what IDC stands for, but quite frankly if he continues to delight with tracks like Eins Deux Tres, I don't care.
